Folklore Village
Posted by Lynn 11-13-07
I was fortunate to learn folk dancing from Jane Farwell at Folklore Village. Jane was such an inspirational person, that I even enjoyed cleaning house for Jane and her mother, Frances Farwell, one summer in the early 1970s; I just wanted to be able to hang around.
The schoolhouse and the farm were always buzzing with activity, people were always flying in from exotic places around the world, and the festivals were magical.
Our group of high school students from around the county traveled to perform for several different events, wearing Jane’s priceless collection of authentic and vintage costumes.
Jane’s vision is still enriching many lives. Folklore Village is just over the hill from Canyon Park, near Ridgeway, WI. Their Festival of Christmas & Midwinter Traditions is held each year in late December, and this is the 60th year of the celebration! Check their Calendar here.
Folklore Village hosts a great variety of fun activities, from monthly potluck barn dances, concerts and family activities, to elaborate holiday celebrations of folk traditions.
Highly Recommended.

Here’s a fun and fashionable way to view the countryside and the studios of local artists. A drive from Mineral Point to Spring Green (we are centrally located) is a pleasant experience, well worth the trip and is about 25 miles. Stopping at the studios can make this an all day expedition. This is a three day event, so you could make the entire weekend an art expedition! A broad array art-forms, styles and interpretations are available. Some of our favorite artists are on the tour. Check it out.

Dad drove Mom & I up to the Czech Heritage Celebration in Hillsboro, Cesky Den. We went early to get in line to buy Kolaches and some other great Czech baked goods. Mom & I checked out the arts and crafts, bought some czech christmas ornaments, and I think we had some good soup, can’t remember what it was called. We left before the Polka bands got warmed up, but I guarantee it would be a great time.
It’s a scenic 64 miles from Canyon Park to Hillsboro.
